chance today to hug and othank the letter carrier who saved their home. on wednesday, the 49 year old was delivering mail at this townhouse complex and saw their two daughters outside with their unanimousny after escaping a fire inside. so the letter carrier, who recently submitted his retirement papers grabbed a began hose and rushed toward the flames. i'm thinking what am i wófwdoin but the little kids were so upset. >> reporter: he says the fire had already consumed part mx the kitchen. >> it started coming up the ceiling and was coming around the hallway. so i got down as low as i could to keep the fire from my head. >> it came all the way from here to here also. >> reporter: they were still stunned that he risked his life for them and the neighbors in the complex. >> he didn't have to do this. but fwhe went out of his way. we are very thankful to him.

happening, the east bay firefighters are working on this fire happening in the retirement community. it start just about 45 minutes ago. it's in an apartment complex on running springs drive. several units are said to be damaged at this point. we have no reports of injuries. we don't know how the fire started but our news chopper has been over the scene for several minutes. this picture hasn't changed much since we first brought it to you you. you see a lot of smoke coming from the apartment complex. i just spoke with our meteorologist and he said winds are slight and there's a bit of breeze and you can tell it. it's not a violent whipping wind. so when you think about other structures. we don't know if that's happening. we do know that several units in one building are damaged. we are staying on top of this breaking news. news chopper 2 is going to stay there. we expect to hear more information just as soon as we

there is a lot of smoke right now but there's a ladder truck with a hose spraying down on top of the fire that's still remaining. 8 total units, but the good thing is, at least so far firefighters say that no one has been hurt and as far as they know no one was trapped by the fire. but these are 8 condo units in rossmore. they're on the south side. firefighters from all around the county have been here and they've mostly kept them away from the south side units as well. but i'll tell you, these 8 units are all without a doubt a total loss. there are some cars, you can see -- they're two story units, but it seems like the garages are pretty much unhurt. aside from water and smoke damage, but the units and

living spaces, all a total loss. >> if if i can ask you real quick, i understand it is a retirement community, were there any special concerns or do you see any of the elderly residents who may have needed special help to escape this fire. >> well, certainly in situations like this there are concerns for anybody affected by a fire like this. but most of the people who live here are older folks. i see one woman right now wearing a mask over her face so that she doesn't enheal inhale too much smoke. one man was able to get up here and was very much out of breath. so even just getting out of this area, even in the best of circumstances, might be a little challenging. >> thank you live on the scene there at that fire happening now. we're going to let you go.

on fire there. he's seen some people displaced by the fire out where he is. mark, when you see this picture, thinking about the wind and the smoke, what do you see. >> i'm looking at the tree branches once again. some weather stations in that area, winds gusting from around 8 to 12 miles per hour. it is a breeze but not extreme. temperatures back down to the mid to upper 70s. >> we're talking about elderly residents there any concern for air quality. >> air quality in the immediate area. it is some what of a concern but at least there's a little bit of wind to disperse that. >> our weather this weekend, low clouds and fog. the cooling trend is here. there's a deeper marine layer that will increase in coverage over the next few hours. a quick snapshot of the 5 day forecast. we do have this.
